IN-DEPTH LC-MS LIPIDOMICS

EXPLORING LIPIDOMICS: from molecular landscapes to biological insights

We employ cutting-edge LC-MS untargeted lipidomics techniques to investigate the lipid composition of various types of biological samples. Our main goals include:

  • developing new analytical methodologies for untargeted lipidomics of biological samples using LC-MS, including serum, plasma, tissues, extracellular vesicles, bacteria, mammalian cells, plants, milk, cerebrospinal fluid, and others

  • developing lipid databases and data processing solutions (software development)

  • detailed characterization of lipidomes

  • elucidating biochemical pathways involved in pathological and physiological phenomena (cancer, neurological conditions, infections)

  • investigating the relationship between lipids, the microbiome, and mechanisms of antibiotic resistance

JOIN THE TEAM!

The Buzatto lab is seeking dedicated students at all levels, ranging from undergraduate to graduate studies. We are particularly searching for Master’s degree students interested in LC-MS method development and software development.

Diversity within a research team promotes a rich and effective environment for collaborative science that foments growth and evolution. We welcome trainees from all backgrounds. If you share our passion for lipids and mass spectrometry, we invite you to contact us!

NEWS

Congratulations to our undergraduate student Zoe Watson for receiving a Faculty of Sciences award for her outstanding work in brain spatial lipidomics! We are very proud of her! (Nov/2024)

Dr. Zardini Buzatto was elected Chair of the Hispanics and Latinx in MS Special Interest Group (@HispanLatinxMS), part of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS), in August/2024. She is proud to represent Brazil and the LatinX community. More to come soon!

We are thrilled to receive funding for the Initiation of International Collaboration Programme from DGF for the project “Role of Cadmium Metal Speciation on Mitochondrial Lipids and Function: A One Health Approach to Mechanisms of Environmental Toxicity”, alongside lead applicant Dr. Wing-Kee Lee (May/2024). Dr. Zardini Buzatto joined a One Health workshop organized by Dr. Wing-Kee Lee in Bielefeld, Germany in July/2024.

The Buzatto group was awarded a Discovery Grant and a Discovery Launch Supplement from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) for the project Mapping Lipid Molecular Species: Advancing High-Sensitivity Lipidomics in Cells and Small Extracellular Vesicles. We were also recently awarded a Research Tools and Instruments grant, alongside lead applicant Dr. Joe Harrison and co-applicant Dr. Maryam Badv, to boost microbiome research at UCalgary with an anaerobic chamber. We thank NSERC for these opportunities! (April/2024)

Our undergrad Tobias Wong was awarded an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) for Summer/2024. Way to go, Tobias!
